    the Pioneer frederick McCubbin
The superb painting by Frederick McCubbin - "The Pioneer"

With the promise of a better life, the pioneers gradually moved out into the Australian bush. This song remembers the personal hardships and loss
that was so often the price they paid.

     HALFWAY CREEK

They made camp at Halfway Creek
For to rest a weary while
Since the rain began that week
    Fever with them every mile

    Chorus

    Just beyond my campfire glow
I pray God their souls to keep
Who of us will ever know
    The half way creeks
    By which they sleep

    Long before the weather broke
Half way short of fortune west
    Of these pioneering folk
Three wee bairns laid to rest

    Chorus

By that creek long left behind
In the hearts of that tight band
Out of sight but not of mind
Three white crosses in the sand

    Chorus
